What Is the Role of the ARC
The Centre brings together Sault College’s talented faculty, staff and students and local and regional enterprises to participate in applied research projects that provide real-world solutions to real-world problems, enabling them to create or improve products and services and compete in the global marketplace.
Applied Research
There is often confusion between basic or fundamental research and applied research. Applied research deals with solving real-world problems that usually have direct commercial application. Basic or fundamental research is carried out to increase understanding of theories and fundamental principles and often times the end results have no direct or immediate commercial benefits. In applied research, activities such as prototype development, feasibility studies, clinical trials, technical consultation and problem solving are often involved.
How does the ARC help
The ARC facilitates the development of applied research projects from start to finish by participating in these activities:
- evaluating and launching projects
- identifying funding opportunities and help to prepare applications for R&D assistance and tax credits
- assisting with the management of projects
- arranging faculty release time to allow project participation
- providing participants to work on projects
- liaising with physical resources to provide work space, laboratories, and other facilities within the College
