Social Service Worker (1203)

Program Overview

Are you interested in improving the lives of individuals, families, groups and communities? Through the Social Service Worker Program at Sault College, you will develop the professional knowledge and skills to assume the role of a helping person in the community services field. You will develop a strong understanding of the needs and barriers that confront diverse and vulnerable people. Within our program, you will learn skills to build collaborative, client-centred relationships that promote social well-being and social change.

As a student you will:

• Learn about social work theories that focus on resilience, anti-oppressive social work practice and empowerment strategies
• Learn to become an effective social justice advocate
• Acquire helping skills in case management, family and group work and community capacity building
• Be taught and encouraged to self reflect, engage in ethical practice and build strong interpersonal skills
• Learn to apply effective assessment and intervention models that emphasize strengths and resources and are solution oriented.
• Learn and demonstrate ethical, legal and professional practice and adherence to the social work values, principles, and skills

Our program offers field placement as an integral part of your learning and skill development. You will experience over five hundred hours of placement experience concurrent to the academic courses taken. This provides the opportunity to practice and apply what you are learning.
