Co-op Work Term

Co-op Work Term

The co-op work term is usually 4 months in length and a minimum of 400 hours of PAID (by the employer) program-related employment. Note: Hospitality Management - Hotel and Resort co-op students may be employed for up to 5 ½ months after their first year.

A co-op work term is an academic component and not a job placement service.

College faculty and staff prepare students for the work environment and provide guidance and assistance for co-op and graduate employment in the public or private sectors.

Staff post local, regional, provincial, national and international job advertisements on the College job board website. Students apply to jobs which are of interest to them and “compete” for these positions. Companies/organizations determine whom they wish to interview and/or test and/or extend job offers.

Evaluation

The co-op work term is an academic experience for which academic credits are granted. Successful completion of a work term is based on assignments which generally include a work term exercise/report, an employer evaluation and a daily or weekly log. Assignments are due when students return to the College to continue their in-school studies.

Remuneration $$$$$

Co-op work terms are usually paid work experiences. Salaries will be within the standards for the industry and commensurate with skills and abilities.

Transportation and Accommodation

Transportation costs to the work site and accommodation/living expenses during the work term are the responsibility of the co-op student. Some employers/organizations provide on-site accommodations.

Layoffs and Strikes

Employers and students are requested to notify the Co-op Office if strikes, layoffs or other prolonged work stoppages occur or are pending. The Co-op Coordinator will make every effort to secure an alternate work placement for the student.
