The Sault College Cougars celebrated another year in sport at its 50th Annual Athletic Awards night held at the Water Tower Inn. A crowd of student-athletes, coaches, staff and distinguished guests capped another banner season for the Cougars as they paid recognition to our student-athlete achievements both in and out of the classroom.

The 2016-17 season saw the Cougars field teams in Golf, Cross Country, Curling, Basketball, Hockey and Indoor Soccer – including 168 student-athletes and 29 coaches – don the Cougar colours in competition across Canada and the United States. Amongst the hardware given out were top rookies and most valuable players in each sport.

The night also saw the presentation of long standing awards to student athletes who in their day-to-day lives represent their respective teams and Sault College as a whole at an exemplary level:

The festivities concluded with the naming of our Athletes of the Year with the awards being presented by Sault College President Dr. Ron Common. The Female Athlete of the Year was a repeat winner as varsity Curler Sandy Toole (Cambridge/Culinary) took home the prestigious award capping a brilliant career at the college. Sandy the skip of the mixed curling team was named 1st Team All Star and took home a OCAA Silver medal at Provincials in February; she has won three OCAA medals, one OCAA Championship, two OCAA All-Star awards and three OCAA All-Academic team honours.

The Ross Bachert Male Athlete of the Year also went to a varsity curler as Brad Manson (Sault Ste. Marie/Police) was bestowed the honour in his graduating year. Manson’s year saw him earn 1st Team OCAA All-star along with OCAA All Academic and a CCAA Academic All Canadian status. In his career, Manson has represented the college in both cross country and curling earning three OCAA medals, one OCAA Championship, two CCAA national medals, and two OCAA all-stars.

The Cougars Athletic department would like to wish all of its graduating student-athletes good luck and thank all of our coaches and staff who made the year’s successes possible through their hard work and dedication. The Cougars are looking forward to the next season as they welcome in a new year of recruits and the pursuit of both provincial and national glory.
