Cloth masks will no longer be permitted. To facilitate the transition from cloth masks, approved masks will be available at Security for those who require one. Masks are required upon entrance to the College, in all reception areas, in classrooms, while in transit through campus buildings, and in all common spaces.
Daily Self-Screening
Prior to accessing campus/properties, we are now requiring staff and students to complete the provincial self-assessment tool to ensure proper isolation guidelines are followed, if applicable. Staff and students are required to abide by the guidance provided at the end of the screening tool. This self-assessment tool has replaced the College’s previous screening questions.
By swiping your student/staff card and entering campus/property, you are attesting to have completed the self-assessment and that you have not been advised to self-isolate and are compliant with the guidance provided upon completion.
Isolation and Testing Guidelines
At this time, individuals with symptoms of COVID-19 are presumed to be infected and should self-isolate immediately for a minimum of five days to prevent transmission. To assist in providing clarity of what to do if you have been exposed to COVID-19, we strongly encourage you review the Algoma Public Health website, which has detailed guidance, including: helpful resources, flowcharts, documents, and frequently asked questions to help you understand these directives and follow-up actions, if required.
Testing: PCR testing is now restricted to individuals who meet specific criteria. See above website for eligible individuals. If you or someone you live with gets a positive result on a rapid antigen test, you no longer need to book a PCR test to confirm your results.
Case and Contact Management
If you have tested positive for COVID-19, you are asked to self-identify and inform close contacts. Informing close contacts will help stop the spread of the virus.A high-risk or close contact is anyone you were less than two meters away from for at least 15 minutes, or multiple shorter lengths of time, without the appropriate and consistent use of personal protective equipment, in the 48 hours before your symptoms began or your positive test result, whichever came first, and until you started your self-isolation.
Notification of Absences
In order to support the ongoing continuity of operations, employees must advise their Supervisor if they will be absent due to isolation requirements. To support academic success, students are encouraged to advise their Professors if they will be absent for an extended period of time.
If you have any questions related to these, please email Health.Safety@saultcollege.ca.

The Sault Safe app now has more than 3500 users, and we continue to receive positive feedback on using and navigating the app. Sault Safe has been an important component of our COVID-19 response allowing staff and students to submit proof of vaccination to ensure compliance with our vaccination policy.
With the start of the winter semester and the increase in COVID-19 third dose vaccinations, we have more activity on the app and have made some enhancements to automate processes and make the user experience more seamless and efficient.
Enhanced Vaccine Certificate:- The app now allows users to scan their Government of Ontario enhanced vaccine certificate with the official QR code. This allows for an automated and immediate approval process.
- Moving forward, staff and students adding new vaccine information (dose 1, 2 or 3) are encouraged to use the enhanced vaccine certificate option
Third Dose (Booster) Vaccinations:
- The College recommends and strongly encourages staff and students to submit third dose vaccination details
- Third dose details (if applicable) are included in the enhanced vaccine certificate, so once users scan the certificate with the official QR code this information will be submitted, and manual uploading will not be available.
- For those wishing to submit their third dose vaccine information manually, the app now has this option on the Passport Status page.
Tip: to ensure the latest settings are loaded on the app, go to About/Preferences > Data Update > Check for Updates.
As a reminder, we want to assure staff and students that personal health information will not be stored and is removed from the app once approval has been granted.
If you have any questions related to these enhancements or using the app, please email Health.Safety@saultcollege.ca.Stay safe.

Further to this, any staff or student who is subject to this additional protocol, can provide a negative rapid test result to access campus. To support this, voluntary onsite COVID-19 rapid antigen testing will be available to these individuals and any other staff or student who wishes to be tested before accessing campus beginning Thursday, November 25, 2021.
Important information regarding onsite rapid testing:

Considerations For Thanksgiving Long Weekend
As Thanksgiving weekend approaches, many in our campus community will be travelling within the province and beyond, or getting together with friends and family. While travel throughout Canada remains without restriction at this time, we remind all employees and students to follow safe practices while travelling and gathering to reduce the risk of COVID-19 and to help keep our community healthy.
Those who travel outside of Canada are required to quarantine for a 14-day period following the Government of Canada Quarantine Act. If you are travelling outside of Canada, you must report this to Residence. You will need to find off-campus accommodations to complete your 14-day quarantine period at your own expense.
We ask that students and employees be extra vigilant upon your return from family celebrations and travel, using the daily self-assessment tool and limiting contact with others for the first week or two, given the province's experience with rising COVID-19 cases after long weekends and holiday events.
Have a great long weekend.

Positive COVID-19 Test Result Confirmed In The Sault College Campus Community
Sault College has been informed that a positive COVID-19 test result was confirmed within our campus community. While the College has been closed to the general public, limited students and staff have been onsite since early September with safeguards in place to protect the health and safety of the campus community.
Algoma Public Health has deemed this to be low risk at this time. As part of the College’s gradual reopening plan, it has developed an extensive COVID-19 pandemic plan in consultation with local public health and implemented key preventative protocols including: mandatory masks throughout the building, in common spaces, in labs and where physical distancing cannot be maintained, strategies to ensure physical distancing throughout campus, scanning into the building, a controlled single point of entry and exiting, enhanced disinfecting procedures and schedules, restricting face-to-face meetings, and ensuring anyone who enters the College has completed the COVID-19 awareness training that outlines all protocols and expectations while on campus. The College has and will continue to enforce these strong preventative protocols.
“First and foremost we hope for a safe and speedy recovery of our campus community member,” said Dr. Ron Common, President, Sault College. “The College has established thorough processes to protect the health and safety of the College. These processes allowed us to identify and contact trace members of the campus community that were potentially at risk. We are confident in the mechanisms that we have put in place to keep our College safe and we will continue to work closely with APH to assist in its efforts regarding this positive test result.”

Sault College Extends Withdrawal Period To Further Support First Year Students
Recognizing that the current situation surrounding COVID-19 has re-shaped post-secondary education for the upcoming fall semester, Sault College understands the importance of being flexible and providing options to further support its students during these unprecedented times. To complement this, Sault College is providing its full-time first year students with an extended opportunity to make an informed decision regarding their academic year by extending the withdrawal period with no financial or academic penalty until October 9, 2020.
This extension is available for the fall semester only and provides an opportunity for first year students to be immersed into their programming and make a decision that is best for them. “Beginning post-secondary education is a decision that can be life-changing, and we understand the complexity of this decision particularly given the current COVID-19 situation and the changes to the way we will be delivering programming in the fall semester,” said Dr. Ron Common, President Sault College. “We are focused on helping our students succeed and providing them with the tools to do so is paramount. This extension for withdrawal is one more way we can support them in their decision to pursue post-secondary education,” he added.
Our priority is to keep our students and staff healthy and safe while balancing our mandate of delivering a quality education. In keeping with this, Sault College has announced that program delivery in the fall will be remote or a combination of remote and in-person. While the delivery method of programming may change, our programs continue to be held to the same quality standards and the curriculum and learning outcomes remain consistent with our commitment to our students.
“Our staff has and will continue to work hard to ensure all students receive an educational experience that is both engaging and innovative,” said Dr. Ron Common, President Sault College. “To further reinforce this positive learning experience, our extensive student services will be accessible by all regardless of program delivery. This is our commitment to all students to help them to succeed and gain the most from their time at Sault College,” he added.
“We acknowledge and realize that our students have big questions about what the college experience will look like when they begin their studies in fall 2020. With the college decision to extend the withdrawal date to October 9 students will feel confident about enrolling in the fall knowing that they and their learning experience are important priorities. This decision is also a reflection of the confidence the College has in relation to the quality of education regardless of the mode of delivery,” said Ahmad Alkosani, President, Sault College Students’ Union. “I’m very proud to be a part of Sault College and the Students’ Union. We’ve worked together and collaborated on many projects to support our students particularly during COVID-19. The College has really acknowledged student needs throughout these challenging times, and this initiative is one more example of that support, which will positively impact the experience of new students.”
Should students decide that the learning environment is not right for them at this time, they can withdraw as late as October 9, 2020 without academic or financial penalty. Students will receive a full refund, including their tuition fees and ancillary fees.

Sault College Cougars COVID-19 Hockey Update: Season Postponed To November
After a thorough assessment of the current COVID-19 pandemic, Sault College Athletics has decided to suspend its 2020/21 Men’s and Women’s American Collegiate Hockey Association hockey operations until November 2020. There will be a reassessment in October to determine if play could resume in January 2021. Unfortunately, our hockey programs face challenges similar to other leagues competing against teams from the United States. We are hopeful that today’s announcement is only a postponement of our season but should conditions not improve in the United States it may result in the cancellation of the full season.
“We made this decision after reviewing the cost/benefit analysis of playing hockey and ensuring the safety of our student athletes and ultimately our greater community. We all want to get back to sport, but until we can do so with the confidence that we are not placing our student athletes or others in our community at risk of infection, we must err on the side of caution even if that means postponing or if necessary cancelling our season.” – Paul Orazietti, Manager of Athletics, Sault College.

Statement From Ontario's College Presidents - Fall Programs
As the province begins to carefully reopen, Ontario’s colleges are getting ready for the fall semester.
While COVID-19 has definitely changed the way colleges operate, promoting and supporting a safe environment for everyone who studies, works or visits college campuses continues to be the No. 1 priority. Colleges remain committed to providing safe environments for students and employees while ensuring learning continues. As always, colleges will continue to deliver a high-quality educational experience to all students and support their success in every way.
All 24 colleges continue to consult with health authorities and the provincial government and are putting appropriate health and safety measures in place to be ready for when students and employees can safely return to campus.
Since the onset of the pandemic, colleges have been focused on helping students and clients progress in their programs.
Ontario’s colleges are looking at every possible solution to ensure students and clients who must be on campus to fulfil program requirements can do so within provincial guidelines. Students who can utilize online resources will have the ability to take advantage of high-quality materials, instruction and services designed specifically for their programs.
In the coming weeks, each college will have a specific plan in place outlining details on the remote learning options, campus life and the standards to promote safety on campuses. These plans are being developed in consultation with public health authorities and the provincial government, along with college health and safety committees.
Among other things, elements of these plans will include guidelines for physical distancing, protocols for cleaning and rules for using personal protective equipment (PPE).
Working together in partnership with the government and health authorities, colleges will make sure programs are delivered in ways that are in the best interest of students, employees and everyone who visits college campuses.

Sault College’s Waterfront Adventure Centre To Remain Closed This Season
(Sault Ste. Marie, ON June 1, 2020) – Sault College regrets to announce that due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it has made the difficult decision to not open the Waterfront Adventure Centre in any capacity this summer. Although the College is disappointed, this decision was made in the best interests of both our staff and our community as a whole.
“The Waterfront Adventure Centre opened last season and while we were looking forward to another exciting season, we know that the decision to remain closed is one more step the College can take in helping to keep our community healthy and safe,” said Paul Orazietti, Manager, Athletics, Sault College. “Our community embraced and supported our Waterfront Adventure Centre and for that we are appreciative and grateful,” he added.
Given this decision, all current members will be fully refunded their membership fees. We will continue to keep our members and the public up-to-date on any changes with respect to the Waterfront Adventure Centre.

As you know Sault College has taken many thoughtful precautions to assist in preventing the spread of COVID-19, including: cancelling all face-to-face classes, closing the College to the public, closing all common areas, and limiting areas of use.
We understand that many students rely on our technology and computer labs to complete course work. For the protection of yourself and others, we recommend that you use these spaces on an as-needed basis only. We are here to support you and we want to help you succeed. If you anticipate difficulty in accessing technology to complete course work, we ask that you reach out to communications@saultcollege.ca.
If you need to come to the College for any reason, we ask that you follow the measures in place and only use areas that are currently open. It is also important that if you have to be on campus that you practice social distancing, regular disease prevention protocols, including: washing hands frequently, coughing or sneezing into a tissue or sleeve rather than hands, and staying home if you are feeling ill in any way.
Instructions for students regarding course completions will be provided through the College learning management system. Students who have specific questions may contact the faculty member responsible for the course, the program coordinator, or the academic assistant in the Dean’s office.
We’ve also implemented additional measures effective immediately:
- access to the College is now restricted to the M-Wing Main door (Emergency Door 1)
- if you need to come to campus, you can park in the A North parking lot on Northern Avenue
- College operating hours will be 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. All doors will be locked at 6 p.m. during the week and all doors will be locked on the weekend.
- access to the College’s Physicians will be done using a telehealth type service at this time, appointments are available Tuesdays from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. and Thursdays 1-3 p.m. appointments can be booked through the Health Office by emailing anne.erechook@saultcollege.ca or calling 705.759.2554 extension 2720. Please ensure you include your phone number in your email or voicemail for follow up. Emails and voicemails are monitored each weekday.
important: appointments will not be in person, the physician will call students at their scheduled times
Thank you for your ongoing support and cooperation. Please continue to check your email, LMS, student portal and the Sault College website for more information.
- March 20, 2020
I am reaching out to you today because I know that these last few weeks have not been easy. We have had to make some difficult decisions and, like the rest of the world, we are in unchartered territory.
As new and emerging information is released, our plans and response to COVID-19 evolve as well. This week, I met with our strategic planning team and shared an important direction to help mitigate the risk and spread of COVID-19 among our Sault College and broader community.
As part of this, we thoroughly examined our operations to determine how we could limit the number of staff working in our College buildings. Through these efforts, we identified alternative work arrangements for much of our staff, including working from home and rotating schedules.
Our shared goal was realized and we now have approximately 40 employees physically working within our College, which is a significant reduction. We continue to work on strategies to reduce this even further. We are also ensuring social distancing is being practiced among staff physically working within College buildings.
This, along with our other efforts, is a step we needed to take to reduce risk and to do our part in the fight against COVID-19 in our community.
We continue to take more proactive measures. As part of this:
- Effective immediately, access to Sault College will be limited to the M-Wing Main (Emergency Door 1)
- Staff and students who need to be on campus can park in the A North parking lot
- College operating hours will be 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. All doors will be locked at 6 p.m. during the week and all doors will be locked on the weekend.
- The Print Shop is now closed until further notice
It is also important for me to reiterate the role each of us plays in limiting the spread and risk of COVID-19. I urge each of you to continue to practice regular disease prevention protocols, including: washing hands frequently, coughing or sneezing into a tissue or sleeve rather than hands, staying home if you are feeling ill, and practicing social distancing.
An official global travel advisory is also in effect for all Canadians to avoid all non-essential travel outside of Canada until further notice. Be mindful that if you have travelled outside of Canada on or after March 14, 2020, you must self-isolate for 14 days. Here is some helpful information on self-isolating.
I continue to be in close contact with Algoma Public Health and maintain daily contact with our other Ontario college partners to work together as we work through this situation.
I would like to thank all of you for your support and cooperation. The collaboration and dedication I’ve witnessed throughout this are admirable.
This is an extraordinary time and I look forward to when we can resume our regular activities. Until we get there, we will continue to keep you updated as new information or changes occur.
Thank you.
Dr. Ron Common
- March 18, 2020
As you may know, Algoma Public Health announced that there has been a confirmed case of COVID-19 in the Algoma region. While we understand that this may bring concern, we want to assure you that our College has taken many thoughtful precautions to protect the health and safety of our campus community and to prevent the risk and spread of COVID-19. We’ve closed our College to the public, limited areas of use in the College – including computer labs – made alternate work arrangements for many of our staff, and are actively practicing social distancing. Facilities Management has increased cleaning and sanitizing and we have also re-arranged work schedules to have additional cleaning staff working as required.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding. We are continuing to monitor the situation closely and the College has also been meeting daily with both local unions to exchange information and solicit feedback.
We will continue to keep you updated on this evolving situation.
- March 17, 2020
The COVID-19 situation continues to evolve in Canada and around the world and as you know Sault College has suspended all face-to-face classes. The College is taking this time to review its operations to determine next steps, including: preparing for remote instruction where available.
We are keeping residence open as we are very much conscious of the fact that a number of students will not be able to return home because of travel restrictions, health, personal circumstances or various obligations.
That being said, in order to help decrease density in residence, reduce the risks to our community, and to provide maximum flexibility to our students at this challenging time, we will be refunding residence rent on a pro-rated basis for students who voluntarily choose to move out of residence by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25, 2020.
Check your student email for more information.
- March 16, 2020
Given the rapidly evolving situation surrounding COVID-19, student flight training will be suspended effective Tuesday, March 17, 2020 until further notice. This decision was made in the best interests of both our students and staff.

Marie and Blind River are closed to the public; however at this time, staff is available to assist by contacting Employment Solutions SSM at Webinquiryssm@saultcollege.ca or (705) 945-0705 or Employment Solutions - Blind River at Webinquirybr@saultcollege.ca or (705) 356-1611.
Until further notice, staff should report to work and practice social distancing unless they are required to self-isolate as per the Official Global Travel Advisory
This advises all Canadians to avoid all non-essential travel outside of Canada until further notice. In addition, all travellers returning to Canada from abroad from March 14, 2020 on are asked to self-isolate at home for 14 days whether they have symptoms or not. If this applies to you, please contact your Manager as soon as possible.
- The Health and Wellness Centre is closed
- The Ron Doyle Library is closed
- The Early Learning Centre is closed
- Food services are closed to all students except those living in residence
- Residence is open at this time to those currently residing in the building
Students should also be aware of the Official Global Travel Advisory, which advises all Canadians to avoid all non-essential travel outside of Canada until further notice. In addition, all travellers returning to Canada from abroad from March 14, 2020 on are asked to self-isolate at home for 14 days whether they have symptoms or not. Please do not come to the College or any College building if this applies to you.
You can keep up-to-date on this evolving situation by visiting the Algoma Public Health website.

I know there has been a lot of information shared about COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus). I want to reassure all of you that we are working diligently to keep our campus, students and staff healthy and safe. As part of this, Sault College has and will continue to work closely with Algoma Public Health (APH) and follow its direction. At this time, APH has advised that there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Algoma.
We want to assure you that we are taking appropriate measures to help to protect our College community in response to COVID-19. These include:
- arranging for additional surface cleaning across the College specifically in high traffic areas
- installing additional hand sanitizing stations
- ensuring all cleaning products are hospital grade
- participating in thorough pandemic planning in coordination with appropriate stakeholders and experts
- creating four key committees with subject matter experts to actively participate in pandemic planning in coordination with provincial partners and medical experts
- continuing ongoing communication with staff and students to provide updates as appropriate
As we work through this, we must reiterate the importance of practicing regular disease prevention protocols, including: including: washing hands frequently, coughing or sneezing into a tissue or sleeve rather than hands, and to stay home if you are feeling ill.
We also want to ensure you are aware of travel restrictions and associated protocols particularly with the upcoming March break. As communicated earlier today, if you do travel, it is essential that you keep up-to-date on travel advisories and what to do as this is a rapidly evolving situation. If you will be travelling, please take active measures to regularly visit the Algoma Public Health website for up-to-date information and follow all protocol as outlined.
We understand there may be concern among staff and students and I want you to know that we are taking this seriously and your health and safety remains our top priority.

Further to our recent communication, the College has and will continue to closely monitor the ongoing situation with COVID-19 (novel coronavirus). Algoma Public Health is also closely monitoring this situation with local, provincial and federal partners and the risk in our region remains low.
Algoma Public Health recently released a statement on the COVID-19 specifically regarding an update for travellers. While we have shared this statement, we want to reiterate this important information.
Algoma Public Health has advised the following:
- Travellers who have returned from Hubei province, including Wuhan City, should:
- stay at home and avoid close contact with others, including those in their home, for a total of 14 days from the date they left Hubei province.
- contact their local public health department within 24 hours of arriving in Canada. For Algoma residents, this means contacting Algoma Public Health at 705-759-5404 or 1-866-892-0172, ext. 5404.
Please note that the College can confirm that there has been no incoming travel from this area to the College.
Travellers who have returned from anywhere else in mainland China, or Hong Kong, Iran, Japan, Italy, Singapore, or South Korea should:
monitor themselves for symptoms including fever, cough and difficulty breathing for 14 days after leaving the impacted area.
if symptoms develop, call Algoma Public Health prior to seeking medical care. Algoma residents may reach Algoma Public Health at 705-759-5404 or 1-866-892-0172, ext. 5404. If you need immediate medical attention, call 911 and mention your travel history and symptoms.
We want to assure you that these precautions are being enforced and followed. Again, the risk in our region remains low. The College also has a pandemic plan, which is currently under review in consultation with all the appropriate parties.
As a reminder, it is important that everyone continue to practice regular disease prevention protocols, including: washing hands frequently, coughing or sneezing into a tissue or sleeve rather than hands, and to stay home if feeling ill. For your reference, please see the attached poster on effective hand-washing techniques.
To help stayed informed, we recommend you visit the Algoma Public Health website.
Thank you.

As you may be aware, there have been confirmed cases of the Novel Coronavirus in Canada. While the risk in Ontario is currently low, we want to assure you that we are closely monitoring the situation and will continue to do so as necessary.
Additionally, our College has a reporting requirement to our local health unit for anyone who has been to Wuhan China and has cold like symptoms. Should a local case become known, the College has an emergency response plan in place and will follow the direction provided by the local health unit, including: communications and necessary precautions.
We are asking that everyone continue to practice regular disease prevention protocols, including: washing hands frequently, coughing or sneezing into a tissue or sleeve rather than hands, and to stay home if feeling ill. The College is also providing extra sanitizer and tissues across campus and increasing surface cleaning.
