Sault College Responding to an Attempted Cyber Attack

Our Service teams are working diligently in their restoration efforts after the recent cyber attack. They are currently experiencing a high volume of calls and emails. What is the status of College systems following the June 16th cyber-attack?

Restoration efforts continue and are progressing well.  College email, LMS, Teams and Team Dynamix are fully operational.  Other systems have been restored and handed over to internal business users which are not front facing to the public.  The student Portal is a priority but is not yet ready to allow broad student access.  We will update the College community once the Portal is available for access.
 

What is the status of the forensic investigation following the cyber-attack?

The investigation is ongoing and good progress has been made by our internal IT staff and external investigators on the source and scope of the attack.  More details will be shared with the College community when the investigation is complete. 
 

Can I access my College Transcript?

While the Portal is not available for self-service the College is able to provide official transcripts, proof of enrolment letters, and confirmation of completion letters upon request.

What is the status of the College system restore and investigation from the June 16th cyber attack?

Sault College is continuing its work and investigation into the cyber-attack. There have been many positive steps in the restoration of our systems and we continue to move forward.  As part of this process, both staff and students have been advised to re-set their passwords. In regard to the restoration, we are continuing to bring systems back up as we carefully review and check that they are safe and secure.

Has the student portal been restored?

The student portal is not yet available and fee payment receipts are not accessible. We want to assure you that we are working diligently through this and will provide updates on further system restorations as they are available.  Email and LMS are both operational for students and staff who have reset their passwords.

Is Sault College able to process payments for goods and services?

Due to the system outage, Sault College is currently unable to process payments for goods and services. We apologize for the inconvenience and will resume processing these as soon as we are able.

When will I receive my diploma/certificate in the mail?

The distribution of diplomas/certificates has been delayed because of the system outage. We will distribute these to graduates as soon as possible.

UPDATE: June 23, 2021

In a positive step toward restoration, we are reinstating our network access controls today. All passwords (staff and students) have been reset.

When attempting to login you will need to hit 'forgot password' to recreate a new password and this will allow you to access the systems that are currently operational.

What is the status of the systems at Sault College?

At the present time, the College continues to work hard to restore College systems and investigate the impact of the attack. As we continue this work, certain information technology services remain suspended to protect our network. Our goal is to restore operations as soon as possible.

What do we know about the cyber attack?

We are still actively investigating the incident to understand the extent of it.

What is happening with classes/exams?

Students should continue to check with their Professor to determine the status of their classes and exams. Students who are unable to connect with the College should be assured that accommodations will be made once services are restored. We will remain flexible and are committed to supporting students throughout this time.

What services are available to the staff, students, and applicants?

Library systems are not affected by the outage and are fully operational and available at  https://www.saultcollegelibrary.ca/
all databases are functioning
MS Teams is functional and available for peer tutoring


Applications
Applications are still being accepted through the OCAS or the OCAS International Application System as per the usual process.    At this time, we may not be able to provide as timely a response as we would like; however, we will be in touch as soon as services are restored.

  Fees

 Domestic students:   Domestic students can still make online banking payments.

 International applicants:   We recognize that some International applicants may have tried to pay and accept their offer in advance of their offer expiry date. Payments can be made using the CIBC payment platform; however, we are unable to post bank transfers to student accounts at this time.

We want you to know that we will be flexible and accommodating to any applicant whose offer expired during this system outage and who was not able to make payment on time.

Sault College is responding to an attempted cyber attack. As a precaution, we have suspended certain information technology services to protect our network.

We have retained an industry-leading cyber forensics provider to investigate the incident and assist with restoration of operations.

We are working diligently to address this issue, and we will provide further updates as we learn more about the impact of this incident. We appreciate your patience as we navigate this incident.

What’s going on with information technology? Why can’t I access some college information technology services?

On June 16th, Sault College discovered an attempted cyber attack that we are still   investigating. We are actively investigating the impact of the attack. As a precaution, we have   suspended certain information technology services to protect our network. Our goal is to restore operations as soon as possible.

When did Sault College find out about this breach?

Sault College became aware of the incident on June 16. Upon discovery of the incident, Sault College immediately engaged a team of industry-leading external forensic experts to investigate and contain the threat. The experts are hard at work and we will provide updates once we learn more.

Why and how did this happen?

The College, like many institutions, has been targeted by an attempted cyber attack. We are working carefully to investigate the incident and restore our services.

Who was affected and what kind of data was impacted?

At present we do not have any evidence that personal information was impacted, but the investigation is still in its early stages. If we obtain information that personal information was impacted, we will provide updates accordingly.

Has my credit card information been compromised?

We do not have any indication that credit card or any payment type information has been compromised.

When will it be fixed?

We are working to address this issue. We have retained an industry-leading cyber forensics provider to investigate the incident and assist with restoration of operations. We will provide further updates as we learn more about the impact of this incident.

What if I am unable to pay my fees by the deadline? Will the deadline to pay be extended?

We understand that this attack has caused a disruption to our services and we will work with you through this process. We want to assure you that we will not be expiring any offers during the system outage. Please note that the payment deadline has been extended to until further notice. This applies to new and returning domestic students, as well as returning International students. We will be flexible throughout this time.

Here’s what you can do in the meantime:

  1. you can still make online banking payments
  2. domestic students can still visit ontariocolleges.ca to get assistance with applications. You can see Sault College’s program availability, accept your offer,
  3. make changes to your current application, or submit a new application.
I am an international student and my payment deadline is about to expire on my offer? How can I pay? Will my offer expire?
