Call for Participants: Sault College and United Way Trades Day of Caring

(Sault Ste. Marie, ON October 7, 2022) – Sault College and the United Way of Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District are proud to announce that the annual Trades Day of Caring is back! This year’s Trades Day of Caring will take place Saturday, October 22, 2022, and will provide an opportunity for Sault College students to assist seniors in the Sault Ste. Marie area with minor household repairs and maintenance particularly before the winter months begin.

Seniors in the SSM area, who are interested in participating, can contact the United Way at 705.256.7476 extension 0. Interested participants should contact the United Way no later than October 14, 2022. Applicants will be assessed and approved for this program based on need, as well as first come first serve.

Under the guidance of Sault College Instructors, trades students will be assigned to several different households to perform minor repairs to seniors’ homes. Projects may include: window caulking, weather stripping, sealing windows for the winter, and similar items, as well as outdoor maintenance such as raking and collecting leaves, ensuring exterior faucets are turned off, and hoses are wrapped and put away for winter.

“This annual event has helped countless individuals in our community for many years, and we are excited to be able to bring it back post pandemic,” said Marc Pilon, P.Eng, Professor/Coordinator of Civil Engineering and Construction at Sault College. “Trades Day of Caring allows students to take their learning and skills and use them to help those in need in our community. It is a heartwarming experience for students and participants alike and we are honoured to work together with the United Way to make this event happen.”

The last Trades Day of Caring was held in 2019. At that time, 20 Sault College trades students volunteered their time and attended 19 different homes in Sault Ste. Marie to assist with repairs and ensure the homes as well as the owners were prepared for the coming winter. We look forward to achieving this and more.
