Celebration of Success: 2021 Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards

(Sault Ste. Marie, ON March 23, 2021) – Sault College takes great pride in celebrating the successes of our students. As part of this, each year we come together to recognize the outstanding achievements of our students at our Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards (SBA) evening. Although this year we are unable to celebrate through our traditional in-person event, we’ve found a way to highlight the amazing accomplishments of our students and the tremendous support from our donors through our Celebration of Awards website.

The Celebration of Awards website highlights each award recipient while showcasing just how proud we are through special congratulatory messages by some amazing guests! We encourage everyone to check out our website and join us in congratulating our students on their achievements.

This year, more than 300 students were honoured for their commitment to academic excellence and success through our SBA program with $400,000 distributed to deserving students.

“While it would have brought all of us great joy to join together to celebrate our students and provide both students and donors an opportunity to meet and share experiences and stories, we know that this would not be possible this year. Through creativity and with excitement, we’ve found a way to safely recognize the hard work and dedication of our students, while expressing our sincere appreciation to the donors that make our SBA program possible. It is because of the generosity of our donors that many of our students are able to pursue their educational goals and we are tremendously grateful and humbled by their unwavering support,” said Terry Ableson, Financial Aid Administrator and Chair, SBA Committee.

“On behalf of Sault College, I would like to congratulate each of these students for their ongoing commitment to their academics. We are proud to celebrate them for their accomplishments and support them as they move through their educational journey. We would also like to thank all of the individual and corporate donors who stand behind these students through the SBA program. This program wouldn’t be possible without them and we are honoured that they’ve chosen to be champions for our students encouraging them to continue to strive for excellence,” said Dr. Ron Common, President, Sault College.

This year, James Mahler, a graduate of the Electrical Engineering Technology – Process Automation program, was awarded the Governor General’s Academic Medal. Since 1873, Governor Generals of Canada have sponsored this medal to encourage and recognize excellent academics at various levels of the educational system. It is awarded to the student graduating from the previous year’s three-year program who has achieved the highest academic standing in the College in the final year of his/her program.

During the 2020/21 academic year, more than $2 million will be distributed to more than 1800 students through the SBA and other various bursary programs.

Each year, the generosity of donors who support Sault College students continues to grow. This year, several new awards have been established, each offering significant benefits to students. These include: Donald J. Gerrie Memorial Scholarship, Sammy Graham Memorial Award, Joe Ruscio Professional Corporation Award and Lindsay Ann Watkins Memorial Scholarship.

Congratulations to all of the award recipients!
