(Sault Ste. Marie, ON) - Sault College is pleased to announce the appointment of Sherri Smith as its next President, following a comprehensive search in partnership with a third-party recruitment firm. This process included comprehensive consultation of the college and greater community ensuring this decision was reflective of the collective need of stakeholders.
A respected leader with more than 19 years of experience at the College, Smith has played a pivotal role in advancing inclusive, student-centered learning and strengthening the institution’s responsiveness to a rapidly changing post-secondary landscape. She most recently served as Interim President, as well as Vice President, Academics, Innovation, and Student Success.
Smith has provided strategic leadership to Sault College during a period of significant change within the post-secondary sector. She has guided the institution through complex and evolving circumstances, aligning with governmental priorities, strengthening its academic direction, and positioning the College to respond effectively to new funding models, shifting learner needs, and broader system transformation. Her approach has been defined by clarity, stability, and an ability to build trust and confidence across the College and the communities it serves.
“Sherri’s vision, experience, and deep commitment to student success and institutional relevance make her the ideal choice to lead Sault College,” said Tom Katagis, Chair of the Board of Governors. “She has demonstrated exceptional leadership during a critical time for the institution and has earned the respect of those across our College and community. At a time when things could have remained status quo, Sherri rose to the occasion and did more than keep the lights on; she advanced the institution in meaningful ways including community partnerships and strategic direction. We have no doubt Sherri will lead the organization into its next, very successful, chapter.”
In her previous role, Smith championed innovation in program delivery, expanded access to education, and aligned academic offerings with evolving workforce needs. Her leadership has consistently focused on ensuring that students are supported to succeed in an increasingly complex and dynamic environment.
In addition to her work at Sault College, Smith serves on the Board of Governors for Sault Area Hospital. She is also a former high-performance athlete in track and field and triathlons, earning both national and world championship titles.
“I am proud to continue serving Sault College in this role,” said Smith. “Building on our momentum, we will advance a bold strategy that strengthens student success, deepens community and industry partnerships, and positions the College as a leader in innovation, inclusion, and workforce development for the future.”
