This session will provide an introduction to Indigenous Medicine in Northern Ontario (the heart of Turtle Island). The history of Indigenous medicine in the Americas will be reviewed, including the basic scientific nature of its development in contrast to “Western” medicine of the same time period. The four Sacred Medicines will be introduced, followed by examples of other common Indigenous medicines. In turn, all of this will be incorporated into the holistic approach to health and life balance as represented by the Anishinaabe medicine wheel.
Facilitated by Dr. Gene Turgeon (retired local dermatologist and author - Medicine In Early Sault Ste. Marie Ontario: From Indigenous Healers to Pioneer Physicians), Dr. Gary Sibbald (visiting dermatologist), and Constance Manitowabi.
