Past Local Applied Research Projects

  • Conceptualized and built an automated system to sort logs on a moving sawmill conveyor according to size, length, and shape for industrial partner Boniferro Mill Works in Sault Ste. Marie.
  • Used a cyclops robot to untangle heavy steel machine parts in partnership with Rector Machine Works in Sault Ste. Marie. Like the mythical giant with a single round eye, the robot gripper was guided by a one-camera system.
  • Created a flexible packaging system with a custom touch-panel interface for a complete line of products in collaboration with Pollard Bank Note in Sault Ste. Marie.
  • Used a robot to pick lumber components from an automated saw in a prescribed order onto skids to improve the workflow in a truss plant for industrial partner Soo Mill in Sault Ste. Marie.
  • Demonstrated an assembly line inspection robot with machine vision that positioned delicate solar panel components and made corrections when needed in partnership with Heliene in Sault Ste. Marie.
  • Tested automation sensors that helped applied research partner Ellsin Environmental in their microwave-based tire recycling operation.
