Labour Market Conditions

Clinical IT Manager

This occupational group is expected to face labour shortage conditions over the period of 2022-2031 at the national level. Ontario expects a very good outlook, with several new positions from employment growth and a moderate number of positions from retirements. Main trends affecting employment include a greater use of advanced computer technology by organizations, large investments in the automotive industry, ongoing development of autonomous vehicle technologies, the prevalence, growing concern, and rising costs of cybersecurity breaches, and key technology trends such as the Internet of Things (IoT), ‘Big Data’ analytics, and artificial intelligence (AI).

Fitness Consultant 

The employment outlook in Ontario will be moderate with employment growth during the 2022-2024 period leading to several new positions and a moderate number of positions becoming available from retirements. The main sectors this group works in are the local, municipal, regional, aboriginal and other public administration sector, and the arts, entertainment and recreation sector.

Informatics Consultant 

The labour shortage conditions seen in recent years in Canada is expected to persist into the 2022-2031 period with this group. The employment outlook will be very good in Ontario through 2024, with employment growth leading to several new positions and a moderate number of positions due to retirements. Growth in this employment group will be expected from a greater use of the internet and the technological changes in many business operations, with spending on new software and related products and systems, including in the finance and insurance and health care sectors. The prevalence, growing concern, and rising costs of cybersecurity breaches and remote work structures resulting from COVID-19 accelerated information technology (IT) transformation will also allow for growth.

Large investments in the automotive industry and ongoing development of autonomous vehicle technologies, increased private and public-sector investments in digital infrastructure, including broadband projects, and key technology trends related to artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), virtual and augmented reality, blockchain, and cloud technologies will also affect employment positively. Work can be found in various industries, but most are employed in computer systems design services, with employers also in financial services, mainly banks, and insurance companies, public administration, largely federal government departments, and information and cultural industries, mainly wired telecommunications carriers.

Manager in Health Care

There will continue to be a balance between labour supply and demand through 2031 in Canada, while the Ontario employment outlook will be very good. Employment growth will lead to several new positions and several positions to become available due to retirements. This occupation sees 95% of workers in full-time roles, compared to 79% for all occupations.

Nursing Coordinator

This occupational group is expected to face labour shortage conditions over the 2022-2031 period at the national level. The employment outlook through 2024 in Ontario will be very good leading to several new positions and several positions available due to retirements. The growing and aging population in Ontario will increase the need for health care services, supporting opportunities in this occupation, along with a greater demand on the health care system because of the COVID-19 pandemic and a backlog of medical procedures. Investments to increase care and capacity at long-term care homes and support home and community care services and expansions to health care facilities and the construction of new hospitals in the province will also support employment growth. Employment can be found in hospitals, nursing and residential care facilities, and out-patient care centres and home health care service providers.

Occupational Therapist  Assistant

Outlooks were not prepared for Canada.   The employment outlook in Ontario through 2024 will be good, with employment growth leading to several new positions and a moderate number of positions to become available due to retirements. The two main sectors this group work in  ambulatory health care services and hospitals. 

Personal Support Worker – Home Support

Although the labour shortage conditions seen in recent years from this group were expected to be temporary, the projected number of job seekers is not expected to be large enough to return this occupation to balance conditions over the projection period in Canada. As a result, the shortage conditions will become more structural, continuing over the 2022-2031 period. In Ontario, the employment outlook will be very good with employment growth leading to several new positions and several positions to become available from retirements. Greater demand on the health care system because of the COVID-19 pandemic and increased need for personal support workers, along with a growing and aging population increasing demand for workers to provide services to seniors, persons with disabilities, or convalescent clients in a home setting will lead to employment growth. Investments to increase care and capacity at long-term care homes and initiatives to support home and community-based care, including respite services will also support job prospects in this group. Employment can be found with health care and social assistance providers of individual and family services, home health care, and nursing and residential care, as well as private households.

Personal Support Worker – Medical

Canada will continue to experience a shortage of workers to fill PSW positions. 191,000 new job openings are expected with 170,100 new job seekers expected to be available to fill them. Ontario will see a good outlook for this group with employment growth to lead to several new positions and a moderate number of positions to be available due to retirements. Investments in long-term care homes, increased need for health-related services to support the growing and aging population in Ontario and funding for hospitals and mental health services will support employment growth, along with a greater demand on the health care system because of the COVID-19 pandemic and a backlog of medical procedures and patient care needs. The majority in this group are employed in nursing and residential care facilities, with hospitals and ambulatory services also key employers.

Personal Trainer

Labour demand and labour supply are expected to be broadly in line for this occupation group through 2031 at the national level. New job openings are expected to total 60,800 with 50,600 new job seekers expected to be available to fill them. Ontario expects a moderate outlook with employment growth leading to a moderate number of new positions. The main sector for employment with this group is arts, entertainment and recreation.

Physiotherapy Assistant (PTA)

Canada prospects were unavailable. The employment outlook will be moderate in Ontario, with employment growth leading to several new positions and a moderate number of positions available due to retirements. This group mainly works in the following three sectors: ambulatory health care services, hospitals, and nursing and residential care facilities.

Registered Nurse (RN)

A shortage of both Registered Nurses is expected to continue in Canada through at least 2031. Ontario will expect a very good outlook through 2024, with several new positions expected and a moderate number of positions to become available from retirements. Employment growth will come from the increased need for health-related services to support the growing and aging population in Ontario, a greater demand on the health care system because of the COVID-19 pandemic including a backlog of medical procedures and patient care needs, investments in new hospitals and in mental health services, and from initiatives to improve home and community-based patient care services. The majority of this group are employed in hospitals, with some in nursing and residential care facilities.

Registered Practical Nurse (RPN)

The labour shortage conditions seen in recent years is expected to persist  through 2031 in Canada. The employment outlook in Ontario will be very good, with employment growth leading to several new positions and a moderate number of positions becoming available due to retirements. Employment growth will be expected from the growing and aging population in Ontario increasing the need for health care services, a greater demand on the health care system because of the COVID-19 pandemic and a backlog of medical procedures, investments to increase care and capacity at long-term care homes, initiatives to support home and community care services, including acute care needs, and expansions to health care facilities and the construction of new hospitals in the province. Hospitals, nursing and residential care facilities, and home health care service providers and offices of physicians are where employment can be found.
