Labour Market Conditions

Adventure Site Interpreter

The projected number of job openings in Canada is expected to surpass the projected number of job seekers, significantly enough to eliminate the temporary surplus situation seen over the 2019-2021 period, returning this occupation to balance conditions through 2031. New job openings arising from expansion demand and replacement demand are expected to total 6,200, while 5,100 new job seekers arising from school leavers, immigration and mobility are expected to be available to fill them. Ontario's employment outlook not available.

Environmental Officer

An employment outlook for Canada is not available. The employment outlook in Ontario will be good, with employment growth leading to several new positions and a moderate number of positions available from retirements. Main trends allowing for employment growth include the ongoing concerns and regulations related to food, environmental, and workplace safety, mandatory inspections at restaurants, hotels, schools, hospitals and other public facilities or institutions to maintain enhanced public health standards, and proactive inspections as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Employment will mainly be found in federal, provincial, and municipal governments, with a smaller number of inspectors in consulting, which includes environmental consulting services.

Fish and Wildlife Technician

Labour demand and labour supply are expected to be broadly in line for this occupation group over the 2022-2031 period at the national level. Ontario’s employment outlook will be moderate, with employment growth leading to several new positions. Employment growth can be expected due to public and private sector investments in life sciences and research, including the strengthening of the biomanufacturing sector in light of the pandemic, and initiatives related to advancements in agriculture to address the impact of climate change, wildlife management and to support the aquatic ecosystem. While this group can be employed in a variety of sectors, the majority will be employed in the public administration sector, mainly federal government departments, along with the scientific and development services sector, and the manufacturing sector being mostly pharmaceutical production.

Forestry Technician

Canada employment outlook was not available. The employment outlook for Ontario through 2024 will be moderate, with employment growth leading to a moderate number of new positions. Employment growth can be attributed to an increasing focus on growing and adopting sustainable forest management practices, addressing climate change and expanding urban forestry, and the growing use of wood in non-traditional construction. Efforts to collaborate with Indigenous communities on forestry-related initiatives may provide new avenues of employment, along with  provincial laws, such as the requirement for regeneration of harvested Crown lands. Employers for this occupation usually include public administration and companies providing support to the forestry sector. 91% of workers in this group are working full-time, compared to 79% for all occupations.

Forestry Worker

As job openings and job seekers are projected to be at relatively similar levels over the 2022-2031 period, the balance between labour supply and demand seen in recent years in Canada is expected to continue over the projection period.

In Ontario in 2022, there were 39 job postings for this occupation group, for a 160% increase from 15 job postings the year prior. The median full-time employment income is $48,400. Those in this occupation who completed a college certificate or diploma earned $60,918 in 2015 which was the highest reported income for educational attainment groups listed and is higher than all occupations by $7,000.*

Greenhouse Supervisor

The employment outlook for Canada was unavailable. Prospects in Ontario through 2024 will be moderate, and employment is expected to remain relatively stable. Employment growth can be expected for this occupation due to healthy levels of activities in non-residential and residential construction, in the housing resale market to provide landscaping services, changes to environmental and energy regulations allowing green roofs on certain buildings, expanded protections to natural areas, public sector investments in agricultural and horticultural clusters, increased greenhouse, and nursery and floriculture production in Ontario. Restructuring in the cannabis industry may affect opportunities for growers in this occupational group. The majority of employers are in companies that provide landscape and maintenance services to buildings and residences, followed by amusement and recreational facilities, such as golf courses and farms, particularly those in greenhouse, nursery and floriculture production, as well as self-employment. 50% of this occupation are self-employed, compared to an average of 12% for all occupations.
